FAQ

About 40% of the water Californians use at home is used outdoors. Large water savings can be gained by efficient landscape design, installation, management, and maintenance. This is accomplished by choosing climate adapted plants, improving soil conditions, using, and maintaining high efficiency irrigation equipment and managing the irrigation schedule to fit the plants water needs as they are influenced by local climate. To increase water efficiency and better use a valuable resource, rainwater and stormwater collection and graywater and recycled water can replace or augment potable water use in landscapes (California Department of Water Resources).

What are the MWELO Compliance Methods?

MWELO has both a Performance Method and Prescriptive Method. The larger the landscaping project (in square feet) the more detail is required, which will require a formal set of landscaping plans. We can provide both planting and irrigation plans (water budget).

Landscape Areas 2,500 square feet or Less: Performance or Prescriptive Methods allowed. Landscape Areas greater than 2,500 square feet: Performance Method ONLY.

It stands for Water Use Classification of Landscape Species. It’s a database that helps landscape professionals select plants and develop irrigation schedules based on water needs. With the help of landscape professionals and statewide nurseries, the list assigns a letter to each land species based on its water needs: very low, low, medium and high.

Change the verbiage to: It is a document certifying that you have complied with all water and state requirements. It is signed by the Landscape contractor after it has been installed. Here is a sample of what it may say on the document.

“I/we certify that based upon periodic site observations, the work has been completed in accordance with the ordinance and that the landscape planting and irrigation installation conform with the criteria and specifications of the approved Landscape Documentation Package. As-built drawings have been provided to document any major modifications of the approved Landscape Documentation Package. Significant changes made during construction comply with the ordinance.”
